40 in My 40s | Donating Blood: Giving Life

Kicking off another goal for the #40InMy40s Campaign!

The 40 In My 40s campaign has always been about intentional actions that create real, lasting impact. Some goals stretch the body. Others sharpen the mind. And a few—like this one—have the power to save lives.

This chapter of the journey focuses on a simple yet profound commitment:

Donating blood 40 times.

It’s a goal rooted in service, science, and community—one that embodies the heart of STRIVE: intentionality, excellence, and impact beyond ourselves.

Why Donating Blood Matters

Every blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives. Trauma patients, cancer survivors, premature infants, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those undergoing major surgeries all rely on a safe, consistent blood supply. Yet blood shortages are a persistent challenge in the U.S. Donations often decline during holidays, summer months, and times of crisis—precisely when the need is greatest. Committing to regular blood donation helps stabilize this supply and ensures that lifesaving care is never delayed.

The Medical Benefits of Donating Blood Regularly

While the primary purpose of donating blood is to help others, there are also documented health benefits for donors:

❤️ Cardiovascular Health

Regular blood donation can help reduce excess iron stores in the body. Elevated iron levels have been associated with increased oxidative stress, which may contribute to cardiovascular disease. Lowering iron levels through donation can support heart health over time.

🩺 Routine Health Screening

Each donation includes a basic health check—pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin levels, and temperature. These screenings can occasionally identify early health issues, prompting donors to seek medical care sooner.

🧬 Improved Blood Cell Renewal

After donating, the body works to replenish lost blood cells, stimulating the production of new red blood cells and supporting healthy bone marrow function.

🧠 Psychological & Emotional Well-Being

Acts of altruism—like donating blood—have been linked to improved mood, reduced stress, and a stronger sense of purpose. Giving regularly reinforces a mindset of service and gratitude.

The Community Impact: More Than a Single Donation

Blood donation is not an isolated act—it’s a community lifeline.

When individuals commit to donating consistently:

  • Hospitals can plan surgeries with confidence

  • Emergency rooms are prepared for trauma cases

  • Cancer treatments continue uninterrupted

  • Local and national blood reserves remain stable

This ripple effect strengthens healthcare systems and reinforces the idea that healthy communities are built through shared responsibility.

Partnering With the American Red Cross

A key part of this goal involves supporting the work of the American Red Cross, one of the largest and most trusted blood collection organizations in the country.

Beyond blood donation, the American Red Cross:

  • Responds to natural disasters and emergencies

  • Supports military members and their families

  • Provides lifesaving education and training

  • Strengthens local communities through preparedness and resilience initiatives

Donating through the Red Cross ensures that each contribution is safely collected, rigorously tested, and delivered where it’s needed most.

Why This Goal Belongs in 40 In My 40s

This commitment isn’t about checking a box—it’s about showing up repeatedly.

Donating blood 40 times represents:

  • Consistency over convenience

  • Service over self-interest

  • Impact measured in lives, not likes

It’s a reminder that transformation doesn’t always come from grand gestures. Sometimes, it comes from rolling up your sleeve—again and again.

A Challenge to You

If this goal resonates with you, consider joining the movement:

  • Schedule your first donation

  • Invite a friend to donate alongside you

  • Make blood donation a recurring habit

  • Support organizations that keep our communities healthy

Because progress isn’t just about what we build for ourselves—it’s about what we give to others.

This is STRIVE in action. This is 40 In My 40s. And this is how we give life—intentionally.
